Hey Mama! Feeling Stressed? Let's Chat Nutrition and Sanity...And Gremlins...
Hey Mama,
First things first: on a scale of 1 to 10, how stressed are you?
Are we talking "lost my keys again" stressed or "how did slime end up on the ceiling" stressed?
Take a second to really think about it.
Now, why did you rate it that way? Is it money? Family dynamics? That never-ending to-do list? Maybe it’s work, traffic, or the kids being...well, kids.
All these things stack up, and voila, your stress level is sky-high.
But here’s a plot twist: what if I told you that this
"visible stress", the stress we can point our fingers at, and is just the tip of the iceberg?
Yep, the daily grind and chaos are only about 1/8th of your stress pie. The other pieces? They’re not where most people go looking for stress, but inside your body is being overwhelmed by a gang of gremlins whose leader's name is INFLAMMATION.
And what happens when a cute gremlin gets wet? It makes more gremlins, but they are angry and mean, same thing with these inflammation gremlins, if they get "activated" they multiply.
The more angry, wild gremlins you have, the more stress you feel, and the less you can handle the "visible stress" that is always around you as a mom, like finding wads of gum stuck in the truck's door handle. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.
And stress, become more stress, which led to even more stress..
Here’s the kicker: stress left unchecked doesn’t just stay put; it multiplies. Our bodies weren’t made for the constant bombardment of modern-day stressors and the crazy food system we have now. Back in the day, stress was quick—think running away from a saber-toothed tiger.
Now, it’s like a never-ending game of dodgeball, but with bills, deadlines, and tantrums.
Every time your heart races due to stress, your body jumps into action, using up precious resources to manage the “danger.” But when it’s time to get back to joy and happiness, there’s nothing left. It’s like trying to fill a pool with a teaspoon.
The result? You feel like happiness is a unicorn—rare and elusive.
Elevated stress hormones mean low energy, stubborn weight gain, and life feels like it’s getting harder by the day.
So, how do we break free from this cycle? Here's where it gets real. Perceived "visible stress" is tricky, because it is hard to control the outside world.
The good news is, the real game-changer to how much stress and overwhelm you feel is nutrition.
Yep, what you put into your body can take you from being a strung-out hot mess mama to having more peace than a zen monk budda yogi mama.
And heres how you going to do it.
The Right Nutrition for Stress Management
Blood sugar regulation and hormone balance are a quarter of the stress pie.
Your body feels calm when everything is predictable, it does not like surprises. Surprises = stress
If you’re riding the carb roller coaster, your body is not driving a straight road on cruise control, it's screaming at the top of its lungs to get off the ride.
Blood sugar rises and falls are stress signals to the body telling the body it needs to do something so you don't die. What you feel is, hangry, and if you don't eat soon...someone is going to have to clean up their toys... all of them... NOW!
You think I am being dramatic, but once you experience what it feels like off the roller coaster, you will get it.
Then there’s inflammation—another quarter of the pie. Eating foods your body doesn’t like? Your body retaliates by driving up inflammation. So if your body hates gluten, when you eat a tasty piece of bread or bowl of pasta, what it feels like in the body is similar to accidentally putting hot sauce in your eye.
Your body feels it, and it's freaking out, so you freak out over your toddler feeding his bun to the dog, and now you know you will be up all night. But you can't yell at your toddler so you yell at your husband for not watching your son more closely. He was right next to him when he did it.
Takeaway? Focus on insulin-balancing foods and figure out which foods your body’s just not into. Avoid those foods most of the time
Not likely, because most of us are not. We are eating on the run and if were being real, our mamas never taught us the recipe. We can whip up pancakes from scratch in 60 seconds, but happiness nope, not a chance. So if you want the recipe then here it is.
Protein and fats. Your body makes all the hormones and brain chemicals for happiness and calm out of these to things, and if you are not getting enough then you will feel stress. There are other ingredients too like vitamin D and zinc, but thats nothing a good multivitamin can't handle. This is what I use for all my vitamin needs. (It's an affiliate link but honestly, this supplement fixed my hormones so it's a 5 star product in my books, you can read about that here...).
Next, prioritize the building blocks of happy hormones found in protein and healthy fats. When you get enough of these, life gets easier. Aim for upwards of 120 grams of protein a day and include a daily omega-3 supplement plus about 2 tablespoons of healthy fats like olive oil.
And here’s the magic: you don’t have to navigate this alone. So stop being stubborn and join The Keto Collective already. I and the amazing community are here to support you every step of the way.
